Guide to Credentials

Before starting a maritime career, most people will need a Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC), and many vessel-based jobs also require a Merchant Mariner Credential (MMC).

Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC)

The TWIC is a security clearance card issued by the Transportation Security Administration (TSA). It gives you access to secure areas of ports, vessels, and maritime facilities.

  • Required for most maritime jobs — on vessels and in port facilities
  • Issued by TSA
  • Apply online: tsa.gov/twic

Merchant Mariner Credential (MMC)

The MMC is your official license issued by the U.S. Coast Guard. It proves you’re qualified for certain positions aboard vessels.

  • Required for most jobs working on U.S. commercial vessels
  • Not always needed for shore-based or some entry-level roles
  • Issued by the U.S. Coast Guard National Maritime Center
  • Learn more: USCG NMC – MMC

Tip! Start with your TWIC. If your job will take you onboard a vessel, your employer or training program will guide you through getting your MMC.
