We Work the Waterways: Connecting Students to Maritime Careers for Nearly Two Decades

That's what an enthusiastic Errin Howard told DredgeWire Publisher Peter Bowe. As Executive Director of We Work the Waterways (WWW), a U.S.-based 501(c)(3) nonprofit, Howard leads a small but mighty team, joined by Director of Programs and Operations Pam Maxwell and Director of Marketing & Outreach Nikki Fondren, focused on exposing the next generation to the careers that keep America's rivers, ports, and maritime infrastructure moving. 

While WWW formally launched as a standalone nonprofit in 2025, its team has been at the forefront of maritime workforce outreach since 2006. That history includes reaching over 1 million individuals, working in partnership with maritime companies, educators, and community leaders across the country.

Since rebranding under the We Work the Waterways name in early 2024, the organization has rapidly scaled programming with a clear mission: to make maritime careers visible, accessible, and appealing to students and educators nationwide.
