The Story Behind We Work the Waterways

Every great journey starts with a moment of discovery. For us, it was realizing that one of America’s most essential industries — the maritime world — was nearly invisible to the next generation. Students could name astronauts and app developers but not deckhands, tankering, or towboat captains.

That realization sparked what would eventually become We Work the Waterways. It began nearly two decades ago as an effort to introduce students to the working rivers of America through hands-on experiences and industry partnerships. Over time, the movement expanded to reach communities across the country, connecting thousands of students, educators, and companies to the opportunities found on and around the water.

Today, We Work the Waterways is a national nonprofit that continues to grow, building awareness of maritime careers across inland waterways, coastal ports, harbors, and the Great Lakes.
