Making Waves Supporters

This month’s My Teenage Me is Joshua Burris, Southern Region Representative of the Organization of Black Maritime Graduates!

Joshua’s career path shows how education, hands-on experience, and a willingness to grow can lead to a rewarding career on the waterways. After graduating high school, Joshua began pursuing his Bachelor’s Degree in Maritime Studies at SUNY Maritime College. While in college, he gained valuable industry experience through an internship with Canal Barge.

“I worked my way through school and earned scholarships through hard work. There were times I slept in the locker room to save money. Every shift, every class, and every sacrifice brought me closer to a future I once could only imagine. In 2021, I graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Maritime Studies. I went on to earn my Second Mate Unlimited license and serve as a Dynamic Positioning Officer in the Gulf of Mexico.”

Joshua’s piece of advice to the next generation of maritime leaders is: “Be a sponge. Take notes, shadow great leaders, and learn from everyone around you. Don’t be afraid to put your hands on a hard task. Ask questions, give it your best effort, and you may surprise yourself with what a little confidence can help you accomplish. Just as important, treat people with respect and take the time to understand them. Every person on a vessel has something to teach you, and the way you treat people matters long after the job is done.”

“To my younger self: You left home with a few dollars and a suitcase. There will be times when you wonder if you’ll finish, or if you even belong there. Keep believing in yourself and keep your faith. Sometimes all it takes is one person who sees what’s possible in you before you can see it for yourself. Your journey may take longer than you hoped, but don’t let that discourage you. One day, you’ll be surprised by how much those uncomfortable moments prepared you for a bright future.”

Thank you for sharing your story with us, Joshua, and for inspiring the next generation to explore where a career on the waterways can take them!
